It will be interesting to see what happens to the direction of the org as newer members are installed, members who are more in touch with modern society and understand the need for a more moderate tone to maintain membership and capital contribution.

Social models point to a broadening and softening of doctrine over time, or a constriction to a more hardline, extreme approach to the message and a retreat from the pretense of mainstream. My bet is on the former, judging on the trend..

Since when was Warren Schroeder a member of the Governing Body? I think you have him confused with Albert D. Schroeder who died in 2006.

Here's the current list of GB members and the year they were appointed:

* John E. Barr (1977)
* Samuel F. Herd (1999)
* Geoffrey Jackson (2005)
* Theodore Jaracz (1974)
* M. Stephen Lett (1999)
* Gerrit Lösch (1994)
* Anthony Morris (2005)
* Guy H. Pierce (1999)
* David H. Splane (1999)

The most recent GB member to pass away was Carey W. Barber in 2007.

You may find it interesting to know that virtually all of the young people I knew from the Kingdom Hall when I left in 2007 (I was 22) now have a facebook profile. This is deeply hypocritical of them because as far as I could tell, the society were hardening their line on the internet, not softening it - unless they've reversed their policy on social networking sites since I've gone.

Their hypocrisy actually goes much further than this. I can see from their facebook profiles that they have joined groups which celebrate drunkenness and sexuality. Many of them appear to have been tagged in photos in nightclubs on nights out, all of them cradling beer or vodka bottles and pulling immature faces or sticking their tongues out.

I am on facebook, which is how I saw all this. I have been away from the religion for a few years now and I still do not go out getting drunk or being promiscuous (I'm an atheist, but do not believe that my departure is a green light for rebellion or loose morals). This makes their hypocrisy all the greater.

You may be reasoning that I was part of a weak congregation, but in fact it had a reputation for being one of the most upstanding, with the finest youths in the city. I wonder if the elders know about what they're all doing. And it is literally all of them - practically every fellow young person I knew is brazenly violating their own principles. Not much of an advert for the religion, is it?
